Sebastiano Sofia is an Italian artist from Milan who has undergone a one-month residency at Maraya Art Centre. Working with discarded materials, Sofia creates hybrid objects that question the relationship between the natural and the artificial in our age of rapid change.
The objects in this case have been taken from the Bee’ah landfill in Sharjah and are merged together in such a way that they feel frozen in time. The materials range from air-conditioning units and radiators to discarded palm tree trunks and rubber shards that imagine our future through the results of our consumptive habits. They are amalgamated in such a way that each piece is morphed but with glimpses of the recognizable to create a result that is both familiar and unfamiliar, evoking a sense of continual encroachment and a sort of rebirth of the discarded from its own uncontrollable reproduction. Decorative panels and chair pieces are fused with growing waves of rubber, and found skeletons become timeless polymer forms.
The artist positions himself between the apocalyptic and the redemptory, approaching the dramatic effects that humanity has had on nature in a factual manner. The sculptures are an attempt to come to terms with what is becoming a new reality, pausing a process of constant slippage to try to grasp the methods as the natural and synthetic worlds morph into a new hybrid landscape.
His work will be displayed on the second floor of Maraya Art Centre from 23 June to 15 July, 2018.
